Phonics and Early Reading

Early Reading

At Green Lane, children learn to Read in Reception using the Read, Write Inc systematic phonics scheme. The children have a 45 minute lesson each day where they learn new sounds (phonemes) and are taught how they are represented as a written letter or groups of letters (grapheme). They are then taught to blend these sounds together to read words and then longer texts.

Each lesson follows the same structure which the children become very familiar with:

  • Learning a new sound
  • Revision of previous sounds
  • Reading words with these sounds/ graphemes
  • Practising letter formation / spelling of words
  • Reading passages/texts in the Read, Write, Inc blending books

Children are provided with opportunities to use and apply their knowledge from the Read, Write, Inc. phonics session in a variety of contexts throughout the day, both in their reading and their writing.

From Reception, children also take a reading book home every day.  These are Read Write Inc Book Bag Books which link to the sounds already learnt.  Adults in school listen to children read regularly throughout Reception and Key Stage 1 to ensure the children are reading fluently.
